Welcome to ACLS Orlando, we love the area we serve.
Did you know?
Almost 150 years ago, residents in the Lake Jessup area realized that they would benefit from having a post office. It was a bit of a project to accomplish, however. Andrew Aulin stepped up to the plate and spearheaded the project, filing the necessary paperwork to establish a post office.
Aulin had to decide on a name for the post office. He settled on the name Oviedo, because he liked the idea of a Spanish name since the state name--Florida--was also Spanish. He picked Oviedo after the city of Oviedo in northern Spain.
And this is how the city of Oviedo was established and named.
Oviedo has a lot of small-town charm, even as it now boasts a developed area, housing developments, a commercial district, and a large shopping mall that holds its own against other large malls in the central Florida area.
Chickens are what give Oviedo some of its living-off-the-land country charm. Yes, chickens. They are allowed to roam freely in the downtown area, and have become a mascot or icon of sorts, with their images represented on mugs, T-shirts, and city promotional posters. They were even the subject of a Florida Film Festival film--a short documentary--in 2009.
The chickens aren’t protected by any laws, but since the whole city is designated a bird sanctuary, the chickens are protected by that code.
Sometimes the sheer number of chickens running around downtown hampers traffic. Residents are tolerant overall, viewing the chickens as an amusing and quirky feature of their town.
A few somewhat notable people call Oviedo home--or at least did at one time. The Jacksonville Jaguars NFL quarterback Blake Bartels came from Oviedo. So also did professional runner and steeplechase Olympian record-holder Jennifer Beringer. Jeff Driscoll was a quarterback for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. The renowned “Bug Closet” at the University of Central Florida was founded by entymologist Stuart Fullerton, from Oviedo.
Since it has been around since the later 1800’s, Oviedo naturally has a number of homes and structures that are on the historic register of buildings. The Nelson and Company Historic District, the RW Estes Celery Company Pre-Cooler District, and the First Methodist Church of Oviedo are all downtown buildings erected between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
